Question

90 mazda 133 cu in, single cam, 12 valve, I had the head gasket replaced. It when started cold now ! smokes so bad its a bug killer. The head was checked n tested for cracks. the odd part is once warm it uses no oil at all. you can shut it down for hours n restart n there is absolutly no smoke. none when driving. i put valve seals on n it had no effect. when i presurized cylinders i had no leakage. compression is good. there is a small crack in exhaust down pipe n when started cold it accually gets raw oil running down. it does this even wiyh fill cap off. So it seems to fill exhaust then quits in 20 minutes. then no problem again until it sets overnight. i can start it all day long without apuff of smoke !! I had no oil problems before haed gasket was changed.

Answer

It sounds like you have a valve guide issue. If the guides are worn it will cause this problem just as if the valve seals are bad.

Accepted Answer

From the information you gave me, that is my first impression. If the guide seals are new if would be the guides unless the smoke is from water and not oil.
