Optional Information

Age: >12; Male; Breed: Mixed breed of Persian

Already Tried:
Nothing, I just wash my sheets everyday, clean my bed with solution of water and vinegar. He used to sleep next to me, now I punish him by not letting him come up to my bed.

At the beginning, he only urinated once in a very long time, now it's nearly everyday. Recently he even poo poo on my bed. I am losing my patience and tolerance.

I hope you can really give me some good advice. Thanks.

Info Request

Hi XXXXXXXXXX,

I'm sorry your cat is having this issue. How long has the problem been going on now? Any blood in the urine?

Any vomiting or diarrhea?

Drinking more water?

Is he eating OK?

Have you changed anything recently like type of cat litter, location of cat box, etc?

Have you gotten any new pets or moved recently?

It's been months, at the beginning it only happens once in a very long time, but it became much more frequently in these 2 weeks.

No blood in the urine.

No diarrhear, but sometimes he will cough out hair balls

Eating is ok.

Nothing particular has been changed at home, no new pets, not moved recently, just the same old thing.

OK, well anytime an older animal (whether it be a cat, dog, horse or a human) is having an abnormal issue the first thing to do is to rule out a medical problem. Inappropriate urination and defecation in cats can be either a behavioral or a medical problem. If you rule out the medical issues then you can assume it is behavioral.

My suggestion is to get him to your vet for a full blood panel and urinalysis. It is very common for older cats to have kidney problems and/or issues with the urine (cyrstals, infection, etc). So I would start there. If no medical problems are found you can ask your vet for a medication for behavioral modification. Often times Prozac is used but there are many others too.

That is my recommendation. I hope it helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
