Question

My golden retriever chewed something today that puntured the inside of her cheek. It is not bleeding anymore and does not look big enough for stiches, but it is very swollen, what can we do for her?

Thanks for the question XXXXXXXXXXX.

While I cannot diagnose this over the internet I can tell you the following :

1. Of course it is very difficult if not impossible to apply ointments etc. to lesions on the inside of a dog's mouth. If you want to be 100% safe then the thing to do would be to put the dog on a course of antibiotics.

2. Having said that traumatic lesions on the inside of a dog's mouth often heal well without any treatment. The saliva of the dog has antiseptic properties which aids the healing of such lesions.

A common sense approach would be to monitor the lesion and if does not heal or starts to look infected you could have your vet take a look. Antibiotics are usually prescription drugs so normally you would need a vet involved. Probably it would be best not to use aspirin in this type of situation.

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.

Thank you for the advice. Can I give her antibiotics that were prescribed to a child? I have amoxicillian. I also have a few Cephalexin that our Vet gave to my lab who is the same size but I only have 2 left. Our Vet is on vacation so I am kinda stuck for a couple of days.

Answer

Hello again,

While I cannot encourage you to dose your dog on your own without seeing a vet I can tell you the following :

Amoxycillin would be a good choice of drug in this situation and this drug is commonly prescribed for dogs.

If I was presented with such a case I would use a dose rate of around 10 mg per pound of the dog's bodyweight twice a day for five days.

Where I supply a client with details of drugs or dose rates I try and provide a link so they can confirm the accuracy of what I have said and read the contraindications : LINK

Regards,

Scott
