Question

Hello,
There are five stray cats that have made our backyard a home. We have trapped and fixed all but one. She had a liter of three kittens a few weeks back. She didn't take care of them and we can't find them.
This cat has within the last 4 days become thin and tired. Her breathing is labored. She looks in very bad shape.
What can we do to help her? Does the humane society have a program for sick animals?
We really don't want to see her suffer and we don't have a ton of money for an emergency vet service.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks,
Adrienne

Hi,

Most humane societies will take sick cats, but would likely euthanize her. However, that may be the most humane option for her if she's as bad as it sounds. She could have a number of different things wrong with her. One of the feline viruses: leukemia, FIV or FIP seem fairly likely because she's an outdoor stray cat. Here are links to pages about these diseases if you want more info:

Lung infections, severe respiratory infections and heart failure could also cause these symptoms. If you don't have the money to take her to a vet, I think your local humane society is your best bet so the kitty doesn't suffer.
