Question

hi
I have a 2001 330 ci automatic. From time to time the car has no torque in low RPM. The engine service light came on \. I had it checked and they replaces a variable cam shaft sensor. A month later it is doing it again. It's not consistent seems to come and go. Sometimes it is so bad I need to use the Kick down to get the car ro accelerate. What can it be?

Optional Information

2001 BMW 330 ci converti 3.0

Already Tried:
replaced cam shaft sensor.   Failure codes also say the thermostat is stuck open. the problem seems to occur however after some time of driving. today when leaving work however it happened right away and the service engine light went on .
could it be a loose connection? it only seems to loose torque under 3000 rpm. Above 3000 it regains it as if it had a turbo. What could it be?

Info Request

Hi did the ck engine light come on again? Does it seem like transmission is slipping? Thanks mike

No it does not seem like the trans is slipping . Is seems like the engine thottle is is opening , but somting is not giving it the power. you cana hear the sound of the throttle opening , but no reaction. the light did come on, however I have not read out the code, I dont have a reader. the Mechanic said it would come on until I change the thermostate.

Answer

Hi yes it will keep coming on until the thermostat is replaced. Not sure of your location

there are some autoparts stores that will scan the codes for free. Like an autozone.

Hopefully the code for the no power is stored it could be mutiple things. Without having a fault code its a guessing game on these cars. Here is one example that it could be since it does not happen all the time. Thanks mike

will not let me copy it. Fault with the wiring harness and the throttle assy there is a production date on the throttle to see if it gets replaced or not. But the wiring harness does get replaced no matter what. Internal harness and crimp problems. Just for the same type of problem you are having.

What about the variable cam shaft sensor that was replaced? could that have caused the problem?if so what is doing it now? If the Thoddle is not working correctly would it be stored in the failure codes? Is there a link to a diagnostic procedure on how to rule out or zero in on the problem? is this problem commen to this vehicle?

Answer

Hi if the sensor was repaced should not be that. Without the fault code nobody will know what is causing it right know need faults. Yes the throttle should give some fault codes.

There is no link. This is from my information from bmw site for technicians. The wiring harness is a common issue for this. But need fault codes. Mike

Can i read out the code myself? What kind of reader do i need? Wich wiring harness is usually affected ? What is the best way to diagnose it? Would the wiringharness also register in the codes?

Answer

Hi you need a scanner that is obd and can compatiable. Thay range from 40 to 200 from auto parts stores. The main engine wiring harness. Best way to diagnois is from finding out what fault codes are stored. There are certain fault codes that will pertain to the wiring harness issue. Mike

Where can i get the codes decoded once i read them. I mean is there a list to explane the codes? do i need a obd or obd2 reader ?

Posted by mike 166 days and 12 hours ago.

Answer

Hi yes obd 2 and it will also say ( can ) compatiable also. The scanners have the fault codes listed in a book that comes with them. But what you can also do is come back to this question. Sometimes they will timeout. If it does you can request me and I will answer the question. You will not have to pay 2 times. Thanks Mike.

Ok i wil get a scanner and we can the continue the questioning even after i accepted the answer now? If that is the case i will procede. However the problem is not solved yet and we will continue after i have more info. Oh i have another question ,could it be water getting into the computer or fuse box in the windsheield wiper area?

Accepted Answer

Hi yes we can contuine after you get scanner. Water should not be getting into the e-box where the computer is. They call that the e-box. Only if it was off and not installed correctly or the lid is cracked? Mike
