Question

I have a 2002 BMW 745i. I need to replace the pax side exterior mirror. How do I
1) remove the inner door panel
2) remove the mirror assy
3) remove and replace the glass

The part Number of the assy is 51-16-043-958

A few diagrams would be very handy. I do not want to damage the door panel when I remove it to get to the mirror

I need to replace the entire assy and wanted to replace the glass from the old assy to save from buying new glass. Someone walked into the mirror and busted the frame along the spring loaded shaft. I understand that the door panel needs to be removed to access the bolots for the mirror.

Warning! Side airbag is mounted on door trim panel: Disconnect battery. Important! Do not use any sharp-edged removal tools, risk of damage to airbag.

Press on point (A) and tilt out cover. Release screw underneath. Installation: Tightening torque 51 21 6AZ. Important! Replace damaged screws and nuts.

Carefully lever caps (1) with special tool 00 9 322 out of door trim panel (2).

Lever out airbag emblem (1) and release screw underneath. Tightening torque 51 41 1AZ. Loosen screws (2). Tightening torque 51 41 2AZ. Unfasten cap (3) and release screw underneath. Tightening torque 51 41 4AZ.

Note: Start unclipping at bottom. Unclip clips (1) of door trim panel with special tool 00 9 317.

Carefully unclip door trim panel (1) at top from retainers (2). Feed out door trim (1) from unlocking knob (3).

Unhook Bowden cable for release lever:
- Tighten release lever (1).
- Lever out lock (2).
- Detach Bowden cable (3) towards rear/top.
Installation: For fitting, press release lever (1) fully onto door trim panel.

Warning! Disconnect plug connection on side airbag.

Unlock plug connection (1) and disconnect from control unit (2). Remove door trim.

Installation: All clips (1) are white. If necessary, replace faulty clips (1).

Installation: After assembling the door trim panel proceed as follows:
- Open door window.
- Lock with vehicle key.
- Check for ease-of-movement on retaining button linkage
- If necessary, align linkages

Necessary preliminary tasks:
• Partially lever out cover on door window frame (inside) in front area

Release cable tie (1). Unlock plug connection (2) and disconnect from control unit (3).

Raise seal (1) slightly and release screw (2).

Press rubber grommet (2) outwards. Release screws (3) and feed out mirror (4) with cable. Installation: Tightening torque 51 16 1AZ. Connect plug connection (5) with speaker in cover (1). Replacement: Due to the thread-tapping screws, the tightening torque of the new mirror is increased by 2 Nm. Tightening torque 51 16 1AZ.

Installation: Following parts of mirror must not be damaged or missing:
- Seal on mirror base plate
- Sound insulation in front door
Check function.

Warning! Move mirror glass with hand carefully and slowly. If mirror glass is damaged: Wear protective goggles and cut-proof gloves. Risk of injury by flaking-off glass splinters.

Important! Bring door mirror to room temperature to prevent catches from breaking off. Remove glue between mirror glass and edge of housing (risk of damage). Secure mirror glass against falling out.

Press mirror glass (1) at bottom by hand to full extent. Starting at top, unclip mirror glass (1) all round with special tool 00 9 317. Unlock and disconnect associated plug connections, remove mirror glass (1).

Installation: Retaining lugs (1) must not be damaged. Depending on equipment specification, plugs (3) with cables must not be loose or damaged. Fit mirror glass (2) with retaining lugs (1) flush on mirror adjusting drive and clip into place. Ensure correct locking. Make sure mirror adjusting drive functions correctly.

I cannot get and info on the special tools from the links provided. Is is possible to do this without the special tools? It look likes the square plugs in the center of the pannel could be popped out carefully with a thin screwdriver or a thin strip of sheet metal. I am not sure about the mirror though. Where can you get the specal tools if they MUST be used and there is no other procedure.

Good stuff....I am sure I will accept you answer as soon as I review the procedure and ensure I do not have any other questions. It looks fairly easy

Hi yes no special tools needed just use a small pocket type screw driver. For the mirror tilt it all the way one way and use both hands carefully from the top and start to pry both sides. Yes sometimes the glass does break. We always quote the glass just in case. Thanks mike
