Question

I have a 2009 328i convertible. I need to dry my 20 lb. dog to/from daycare. Is there someway I can turn off the passenger side airbag?

I think I read that it is sensor-automatic. Perhaps I can just put a post-it in front of the sensor? Or, at what high does the sensor read? Perhaps the dog is short enough that the car will not think the seat is occupied?

Accepted Answer

The sensor for the passenger airbag is a weight sensor in the passenger seat. A 20 pound dog shouldn't trigger the sensor.

I just realized my question said I have to "dry my dog". Ha, ha! Fortunately you understand I meant "drive".

Do you know approximately what weight will trigger the airbag? I'm putting in a "safety seat" for her which may weight as much as 5-10 pounds.

Thank you so muhch!

Answer

The threshold should be about 40 pounds. What I would recommend is that you bring the seat and the dog to the dealership and have them hook the car up to the tester and verify that the combined weight of doggie and doggie seat will not be "seen" by the car as a person. It should not be "seen" this way but I would like you to verify this. Your selling dealer should have no problem doing this for you.

Thank you so much! BTW, do I have to pay again? I'm new to this and your e-mail said you could still assist me. Did I misunderstand and have to pay for the additional information? Thanks!
