Question

I have a 2003 BMW Z4 3.0 with 49000 miles with the . I have three problems:

1). I have an automatic roof. It rained last night and when I depressed the top down button it detaches from the frame but will not go down.

2). Occasionally the driver's side door will not unlock. I tried the key, the lock/unlock button near the parking break. Yesterday before the problem described in my first question, I put the roof up and the door was then able to open. Not sure if it was coincidence or related.

3). Today driving into work it felt as though the steering got stiff (sport button was on). I turned off the sport button and it appeared to correct the problem.

Are these problems covered under warranty? If not what is the problem and the approximate cost of each?

Thanks,
Tom

I just bought the car. It's in great shape body and engine wise. Clearly it's used and I know I should expect problems. Just want to get a sense of what BMW will cover under warranty and what I may need to spend to fix (if these things can be fixed). Also is any of it this do-it-yourself?

Answer

Hello and welcome to Just Answer.

With your car being an 03', your new car warranty is expired. If you give me the last 7 digits of the VIN number, I can see if you have a BMW extended warranty.

1. More than likely the water drains for the top storage compartment are clogged and the top hydraulic pump got wet. The pump will need to be replaced and to do so the entire convertible top will need to be removed. This is not something that can be done by an untrained technician.

2. Sounds like a door lock actuator failing. Reletively common. Sort of difficult to replace because the regulator will need to be removed to replace the actuator.

3. The steering should get stiffer in sport mode, this is normal.

You are in luck! Your vehicle has a "certified pre owned" warranty from BMW. This warranty is set to expire 07/28/09 so you need to get it into a dealership befor that. They should cover the top repair and the lock actuator and only charge you a $50 handeling fee.

Anything else, feel free to ask!
