Question

An escaped pet rabbit has set up a burrow in the corner of my garden. It has been there for two weeks. It goes out all night to other gardens and returns to the burrow between eight and eight thirty a.m. He has been chased by cats that are learning his habits. I am very worried he will be attacked. One morning he was wimpering in his burrow and panting, a close shave I think. I have fed him and he he in good health but couldn'catch him. What is your advice as this is worrying me as I am a pet lover.

Hi,

Kudos on looking out for this little guy! It may be advisable to ask your local SPCA/Humane Society if you can use one of their cat "catch traps" (these can be used for rabbits as well). If not, you can pick one up at most hardware stores. These can be baited with food or rabbit treats to gain his atttention. Place the cage near his burrow and check it frequently. Once caught, you'll be able to have him into your vet for a check up and then can keep him as a pet, or place him a rabbit rescue. That said, you may also have a rabbit rescue near you (google "rabbit rescue" and your state). If so, they may be willing to come out and help you with the process. Again, it's great that you're helping him out!
