Question

I've been taking avodart (0.5mg) & flomax (0.4mg) for about 2 months. I have an enlarged prostate and my PSA has been consistently in the 5.5 - 6.0 range. I've noticed an improvement in my urin flow, but do not like the sexual side affects (ED, low desire, etc). When researching these two drugs I've noticed that avodart may be the one causing the side affects. Any suggestions.

Answer

Avodart works by decreasing the testosterone levels in the cell. Testosterone provides libido and sexual desire. Avodart can lower desire, decrease semen volume and cause breast tenderness and enlargement. There is a generic drug called finasteride. Biochemicall it is a bit different and aorks the same way. But sice it is a different drug may not cause the same side effects as Avaodart. Hope this helps.

Since my PSA levels have remained consistent for a couple of years, do I really need to take Avodart? Because of these side affects I'm thinking of stopping the Avodart and just taking Flomax. What should I be concerned with if I do decide to stop the Avodart?

Accepted Answer

The prostate will begin to grow again and your symptoms will worsen.

I would highly recommend that you make an office visit with your urologist to discuss all of the options to include minimally invasive procedures to treat your specific urologic problem.
