Question

I have a 1999 Volvo S80. I've had the throttle body cleaned once - now it is showing signs of needing another clean. I've been told throttle bodies can be reconditioned (rebushed I think) which will give a permanent solution. Is this correct? Also, will throttle body problem affect petrols consumption ? My car struggles to do 10km per litre.

Hi there,

When throttle bodies gets clogged with dirt, there is no other alternative except to clean them. Dirt would stick along the air passages and in time they would build up a layer which would affect the air passages and cause idling issues. Rebuilding is not required if it is just clogged with dirt. There are no permanent solutions to this build up of dirt.

Depends on what problem the throttle is causing, it can affect performance and fuel consumption.

When was the cleaning last done?

I wanted to confirm what I already suspected and you provided that confirmation. I had the throttle body cleaned many, many k's ago so it is due for another going over. I am now satisfied that the guy who went on about rebushing spindles etc was talking rubbish. Thanks again. Allan 780.

If there is wear on the throttle plate spindle, then replacement/rebushing of throttle body might be required. However that is not a permanent solution as mentioned earlier. Dirt would accumulate over time. These are 2 separate conditions.

If it is clogged with dirt, cleaning would do. A worn throttle plate or spindle would cause erratic idling even after cleaning.

Thanks. I'll try a clean. Last one seemed to do the trick (About 40,000 km ago) for a while.Idled Ok until fairly recently.

Yes, 40,000 km is a reasonable period to clean the throttle again.
