Question

Hi

I took my car to a dealership to replace a cambelt. 2 hrs later the dealership phoned me that the dashboard light doesn't go off. I need to buy a part - some steering unit to fix that. I drove the car to the dealership without the light on, the car was fine. After they've fitted the part, the light was still on. They realised that the wiring to the ECU was causing a shock, which damaged the ECU. The wiring was beaten by rats.

Now i'm told the car is not drivable as it will fail.

Please help to explain to me all of this in simple english.

Thanx.

Hi and thanks for using Just Answer.

From your description, it sounds as if you had a repair done to the vehicle which required disconnecting some of the wiring harness from under the hood and possibly other areas. Sometimes if rodents have chewed at the wiring harness and then the harness is moved it can make the damage caused by the rodents to become apparent. When rodents chew on the harness it creates the possibily of severe electrical damage from any bare wires touching other bare wires or metal from the engine.

These types of problems almost always arise after a repair has been performed and the harness has been moved. Rodent damage to harnesses are not often visible immediately until after the harness has been moved or disconnected.

However, if the battery would have been disconnected during the cambelt repair procedure, this problem might not have been found or this problem might not have occured. If the battery was not not disconnected, this would cause the harness to still have electrical current flowing through the wires and it is possible that when the wires were moved or disconnected this current caused the harness to short out and damage other components.

I hope this answers your question and good luck!

Hi Kat

Thank you for the feedback. What is a harness?

Is the correct procedure to disconnect wiring harness before the cambelt is replaced?

Do you mean the short out that damaged the ECU occured during the repair, or the ECU was damaged already?

Thanx.

Answer

The wiring harness is the electrical wiring that connects all of the electrical components for your vehicle.

The correct procedure for almost any repair is to disconnect the battery first then disconnect the harness as needed.

Yes the ECU could have been damaged by shorting out the harness if the battery was NOT disconnected prior to starting the repair.

Hi

From your responses, it confirms my suspicion that the repair the dealership did triggered this damage. I just didn't have facts.

The cambelt replacement was going to cost me R3 000, now because of this damage, the dealership is expecting me to pay R14 000 more as the ECU is expensive.

What would've happened if the correct procedure was followed during the cambelt replacement, i.e. no wiring short out?

Was the wiring going to short out as some point when I was driving the car?

Thanx.

Now all of the information I have given you is based on "IF" the battery was not disconnected prior to the cambelt repair.

Keep in mind that even "IF" the battery "WAS" disconnected you could have still had the same problem because the original damage was caused by the rodents "NOT" the dealership. The wires could have still shorted out after the repair was done and the battery reconnected. So yes, it could have happened while you were driving the car. It is just a bad situation and an expensive repair.
Rodents cause extensive damage and unfortunately you are finding out the hard way.
