Question

Hi I have a 2003 volkswagen jetta that I am having problems with the speedometer. It is at the dealership now. They just called and said they had to move my transmission to get to the problem with the gear of the speedometer. Do they have to do this and is this something that is very expensive to do?

Answer

Well im not sure of that if they have to remove the transmission then yes it can be costly but they should just be replacing the speed sensor which is on the transmission dont have to move it to get to it

when I initally took car in they said it could be a sensor that needed replacing that sounded like maybe less than 100 to do or something else that may cost upto 350 to do.
They called a few minutes ago and said that they had to either remove or open my transmission to get to some kind of gear that makes my speedometer move. He said he would be calling me back in a little while to tell me what they need to do and the cost. Is this something that may cost more than 350 to do? If for example I am driving on the high-way at 80 miles per hour my speedometer will read and bounce back and fourth between 60-65 miles per hour the whole time I am on the highway. Sometimes it may creep up to about 70-75 and at soon as it reaches that will suddenly drop to about 60 again. It just started doing this about 3 weeks ago.

Answer

Definately sounds like the speed sensor and if they remove the transmision it can cost 500 plus just to do that the speed sensor sends the signal to the speedometer it reads off the gear in the transmission if the gear is bad which i doubt then they need to rebuild you transmisison which can cost 1000 plus

No to replace the speed sensor no transmision removal is needed and should not cost more then 200 or so if the gear in the transmission is bad then they need to rebuild the transmission and will cost alot

ok........ I will hope for the best. And only replace speed sensor. But it sounds like that is not the case since they mentioned that they may have already touched the transmission.
-- Someone suggested that I should just buy a speedometer that i can just attach that may be less expensssive than the dealer messy with the transmission. I will wait for a call and go from there. Thank you for all the info that you have provided me. :)
