Info Request

Hello my name is Sam, welcome to Just Answer.

Does this noise only happen when it's warm?

Does it happen at any particular RPM?

hi Sam ,yes only when warm ,mostly after a shutdown and restart, but sometimes while driving in citytraffic, rarely at highwayspeeds. - seems to disappear at higher rpm but not always. - sometimes wont'happen all day,but allways comes back again

Info Request

Were the drive belts re-tensioned after replacement?

Did you check to see if any of the pullys were noisy when the belt was off?

Did this problem start to happen after the described repairs?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how loud would you say the noise is?

hi Sam, -the squeal started first -I then replaced both belts(from BMW dealer) -the belts are tensioned by tensionercylinder - I checked all idler pulleys and all users for roughness and play, before installing the new belts,- no indication of any problem found. .When noise persisted I changed the waterpump, suspecting bearing issues.(old pump still looked good) (from BMW dealer).Again noise came back ,I then changed the tensioner cylinder for the long belt(from BMW) thinking that we needed more tension, again the squealing came back - noise is very loud ,- enough to turn heads -seems to go away under acceleration ,and sometimes stay away for awhile.

Answer

The belt tension is adjustable with the adjuster plate. Take a look at the instructions below.

drive belt.

Slacken screws (1) and relieve tension on belt drive. Note: Release screws (1 and 2) to remove complete belt tensioner. Remove drive belt. Caution! You must replace the drive belt if it is contaminated with hydraulic fluid. Installation: Check drive belt for coolant and oil residue and replace if necessary.

Hi Sam , thanks for your reply , I have this info from the Bentley repair manual.- is it possible, that one or more of the pulleys are worn on acc. of the high mileage?

Accepted Answer

I just wanted to make sure the adjuster plate was set up for maximum tension.

Really, any of the pulleys or even the accesories (alternator, power steering pump) could possibly make a noise like you describe. When trying to diagnose a noise like this, I use a mechanics stethascope to pinpoint where the noise is comming from. You can use a length of fuel hose in the same way, just be very careful of the belt while the motor is running.

Usually is one of the ideler or tensioner pulleys is starting to fail, they will leak grease that can be seen when the pulley cover is removed.
