i have a bmw 318is. the airbag warning light has come on again 2years after the dealer replaced the sensor mat in the passenger seat. Does this mean that the airbags wont deploy (passenger or driver) or just that they will always deploy even if there is no passenger.

Hello, This means that the system is not functioning as designed. It is not published as to what features are and are not available with a fault in the system. The first place to start would be to see what fault is stored. At that point it would may form hypothesis as to related features for that aspect would not function correctly.
As I stated:"see what fault is stored first".
However as safety feature I can only recommend that it is repaired properly.

I will have my associates review your question.. I however can not as a liability confirm what will or will not happen in the event of a collision. This is especially based on the fact that you do not know what component or system is actually failing. A previous problem does not assure a repeat of the same. You are speculating. I would recommend a proper diagnosis and repair. I will as you requested open this question to other experts. Thank you.

Jacob is right. Whenever the SRS light is illuminated, the system is disabled. The airbags won't deploy in an event of an accident!
Diagnosis can only be started once you know what the stored fault is.
