Question

i own a 1969 chevy pick up, and i am experiencing free wheeling in my steering. I can see that as the steering wheel is turned, the shaft doesnt move at the same rate as the steering wheel. I also have notced that the upper half of the steering shaft has what looks like a bearing assembly that the bottom is separated from the housing. This issue is keeping me from showing off my pick up, what do i need to replace?

Answer

I need to know if the bearing you are talking about is at the bottom of the steering column or near the box.

the bearing is on the top of the steering column shaft, just below where the master cylinder is. the assembly is about 8 inches long, and the bottom of the assembly looks as if its off

Answer

There should be the box, then a knuckle, then a slider and then it goes up into the sterring column towards the steering wheel. The area you have described sounds like the lower column bearing or the knuckle. Either one will give you lateral shift and not direct turning of the shaft going to the box.

Answer

That is the knuckle and slider. Since it has come apart you have essentially added a third u joint with no support so you are getting lateral shift. If it is a new part and has just come undun and all pieces are their you can reassemple it and make sure the c clip is locked. It might not have been seated in the groove. If it is the original part and the bearing inside is shot you should really replace the whole shaft.
