Question

I live in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. My lawn is mostly fescue with some bluegrass and field grass mixed in. About a week ago I noticed small patches of grass that were dead. Within the last week the patches have increased probably 3 to 4 times more. Each patch is about the size of your hand. It appears to be mostly the small tender grass that is dying and the tips are turning red when they die. I was hoping you tell me what may be doing this and how I can treat it.

Thank You

It is difficult to say what exactly is attacking your lawn, but the presence of the red tips is an indication that your lawn is being attacked by a fungus.

Red Thread is a possibility because it can be quite severe on fescue and occasionally on bluegrass. Red Thread is characterized by areas from a few inches to a couple feet across. These areas become dried out and tan-colored. The leaf tips then become reddish.

Control with fungicides is not recommended for use on Red Thread. Fertilizing the lawn may help it recover quicker and deep watering in the late afternoons will be helpful as well. You should also collect the grass clippings while the disease is active.

I have attached a link to a website that shows various turfgrass diseases for your review.

It would be helpful as well to contact a local landscape company to come and look at the grass firsthand as well. They may be able to offer some other options to help with your lawn.

Feel free to post any follow-up questions you may have.
