Question

hi, i have a pregnant cat and was wondering how i can tell myself how far she is along in her pregnancy? i have thought about going to the vet but they want £40 consultation fee and id rather not pay this if i can tell myself. as she only had a check up 4 months ago and i know she is healthy. her adominom is very large and round, her nipples have become larger and pinker, and have lost a little fur around them. she is eating well, i am feeding her kitten food, and going to the toilet regualary.she is 2 years old and had her first litter 7 months ago which all went well but with one still born. the 3 other kittens are all well and healthy (and neutered). i do not know when she could of got pregnant as she has never shown any signs of being in season and my partner was letting her out not realising. she is hissing at her other kittens (7 months old) and at my other cat. i have set up a nesting box for her and she has been using it, today she has been getting into small gaps to sleep.

Answer

Hello,

Cats are pregnant for approximately 65 days.

The first signs that your cat is pregnant (aka: her mammary glands get bigger, her abdomen gradually starts getting bigger, and she may act hungrier, needier, etc) occur around day 30 post-conception. So, when you first starting thinking she was pregnant was about a month or just over a month into it.

Birth happens normally around day 65, but a cat can give birth anywhere from day 59-70. Without a vet visit, you're not likely going to be able to determine an exact time she's deliver, but milk production will occur 5 to 10 days before birthing, severe nesting up to a week before, and contractions no more than 4 hours before. Do keep her indoors at this time.

Good luck!

Info Request

Not without more info from you, which is why I gave you the day number of when she was noticeably pregnant. Or I'll do the math for you if you can tell me the approximate day she appeared to be getting larger...

Does she have milk production now?

Do you have a rectal thermometer to temp her?

thanks for replying.
she has been noticeably pregnant for about 2 weeks now approx. she isnt producing milk yet but she didnt have milk when she had her other kittens until they were born. i do have a thermometer but not sure if its ok or not, its one of them ones you can put in your mouth(human) i can use that if its safe too and just buy another. thanks.

The thermometer just needs to be digital, not a mercury one, and then its ok.

Normal cat temperatures range from about 100 to 102.5. When within 24 hrs of birthing, the temp normally drops below 100 and remains there all day. That's the surest sign she's about to give birth.

My best estimate is that she will be giving birth sometime within the next 2 weeks and no longer than that. Unfortunately, without seeing her I can't tell you closer than this. But the temperature will give you the heads up if you need to know. Generally milk isn't seen unless you squeeze it out, and like stated earlier, still only gives you a bit closer of an idea, as this can be produced up to 10 days before...
