Question

My male chinchilla keeps humping the other two males in the cage, and I am worried he will be hurting the younger two. The younger two are brothers, but the one which humps was introduced at a later date. Will it be best to seperate them again, and just keep the brothers together? I got all three of them from the rspca, and was told they should be kep together. I dont want to cause any distress to the chinchaillas if I sepearte the older on,e but I feel they are in distress as they are being humped and attacked a lot. Please help!

Hello,

Such humping is most often a signal of domination. Many animals, both male and female, will do this to an animal they view as a subordinate. Your younger chinchillas are most likely in distress from the constant bullying. I would separate the chinchillas. Such problems are common when several males are kept together, and they will probably always have to be kept apart.

While it isn't common, some people do neuter male chinchillas. That would take care of the problem. You can read more about the pros and cons, the procedure itself, and the care that is involved at the following site:

If you decide to look into that option, you'll want to find an experienced chinchilla vet. This link will take you to a directory of chinchilla vets:
