Question

I just received a Gatewat computer from my son...It is a used computer..It was working when they unhooked it....The serial number is: XXXXXXXXXX ...I hooked everything up and everything is plugged in...
1) My monitor lights up and a red, blue and green box appears and tells me that my monitor is working correctly..
2) The CPU comes on but the light on the push button switch is amber colored not green..
3)   The mouse will not light up either..It is a balless mouse..It was working fine before..I just plugged the mouse in the USB port on the back of the CPU...
Please help...I am sure it is something simple that I have overlooked..

Info Request

XXXXXXXXXX,

Can you hear or see any fans turning in the tower? If you're tech savvy, maybe you can take the side of the case off and take a look insde... See if the fans are spinning...

Let me know.

Thanks,
XXXX X.

Accepted Answer

Hi XXXXXXXXXX,

This could be one of a few things that could be wrong...
First I would open the side of the tower, and re-seat the memory chips. Take them out, and just put them back in making sure they snap into place. You could do the same with the CPU as well. Next, you could try unplugging and plugging the hard drive, CD Rom, and floppy or card reader if you have one. If this didn't make a difference, you will need to start replacing parts...

I would start with replacing the power supply... It's not a very expensive part (around $50) and it is not too hard to replace it. If it doesn't fix it (just return the part), then the next thing to replace would be the motherboard. This is much trickier, since you pretty much have to take everything out of the tower. If you haven't done this before, you may want to get a computer tech to help you out.
