For some reason my computer is not recognizing my ethernat cable. It keeps saying that a cable is disconnected. I even went out and bought a new cable but it doesn't recognize it eather. Can you help me?

I have re-booted both my p.c. and my network modem.(AT&T Motorola) I have tried system restore. I have tried to update my network driver and even rolled this back. I have purchased a new ethernet cable but it is not being recognized. I even went on line to gateway to try and get a driver update but they need my License Key and I have no way of knowing what that number is. I am stumped. I am trying AOL through my phone line for free for 3 months to try and see if anyone can help me out there. I am stumped. The system just will not recognize my ethernet cable!! It is so frustrating!

Thank you for explaining the problem in details, i would suggest you to call up your internet service provided and get the connection checked, it is not a problem with your Ethernet cable or the drivers its basically a connection drop out, which means either the modem is not being recognized by the computer or the line is dead, i would suspect the modem to be bad, then only you get this kind of popup on the botton right hand side of your on the network icon which has a picture of two computers.

I tried my internet service provider first and they told me to try gateway but my p.c. is too old for any help and Gateway has been sold to another company.

The model number of what? The Modem? The Gateway p.c.? The p.c. is Gateway 504GR Desktop and the Modem is a Motorola I don't see anything that says model # but it does say "Style: MSTATEA". Don't know if that helps or not?

Answer

We will try to reset the computer and the internet connection, lets shut down the computer completely first and then unplug the dsl modem from the power socket. and leave it turned off both the equipment for 5 mins and then turn the modem on first and then the pc.
