Question

When I add a sub-folder to one user, Thunderbird automatically adds the same folder in the Local Folder section. If I delete this duplicate folder in the Local Folder section it also is deleted in my user folder, and all messages are lost.
How do I cure this problem ?

Hi,

What you need to do is set up a separate folder for that account. Click on Tools > Account Settings, then under that email account click on Server Settings, then click the Advanced button and select 'Inbox for this server's account'.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Ok, if you want to combine all your accounts folders into one set of folders, you will need to choose the Global Inbox option. First back up your email messages then move the messages that are in the accounts that you want to change the folders of to the Local Folders, then click on Tools > Account Settings, then under that email account click on Server Settings, then click the Advanced button and select 'Global Inbox'. Repeat for every account you want to change the folders of.

Hope this helps.

That is not what I want to do. I have 3 accounts plus the global account on my system. Two of the accounts work fine, but the third one has two inboxes, two trash, and two sent. One set of each of these DUPLICATE boxes never have anything in them, but they just exist there. There is also an account called "local folder" which duplicates all the subfolders of this third account (which has duplicate folders mentioned above), and which fills these subfolders with all the information stored in account three. If I delete a folder from "local folder", the folder by the same name in account three gets deleted -which I don't want to happen. So the question is 1) how to delete the useless duplicate folders in account three ? 2) How to delete the unwanted folders in "local folders" without loosing them in account three? Thanks

Answer

In that case I would suggest that you totally remove the third account from Thunderbird, reboot, then create it again from scratch. But before you do that 1) move or copy any important email messages from that account to a folder in another account or just save the messages outside Thunderbird, and 2) write down the account settings so that you can use these settings when you create the new account.
