Question

Hi, i live in Griffith, IN and I have a ferret who was recently diagnosed with adrenal diesease. The vet recommended lupron injections, but did not know where I could go to get them. Can you point me in the right direction, I do want to avoid going to Chicago, I would rather travel further into Indiana, can you help me?

Answer

This site has info on Lupron and more on adrenal gland disease in ferrets as you scroll up and down

http://www.ferret-universe.com/health/adrenal.asp#lupron

I found this compounding pharmacy that does mail order by prescription

http://www.essexrx.com/intro.html

Leuprolide is a generic for this med

http://www.revolutionhealth.com/drugs-treatments/leuprolide

You may be able to get it through a local pharmacy also for example it looks like Wal-greens supplies it

http://www.walgreens.com/library/finddrug/druginfo.html?particularDrug=Lupron&searchChar=L

So you can contact local pharmacies and see if any carry or can get this as its a med used for human infertility treatments so some should have it.

Or if the dose has to be reduced you may want to work with a local compounding pharmacy (they make dose specific portions of meds) and often you can find them in the phone book to call and ask.

You may want to read this info on the use of the drug in ferrets

http://www.miamiferret.org/24hr_lupron.htm

Hope this helps you!

Thank you for the fast response. I have checked some of your sites that were unfamiliar to me, the pharmacy sites offer Lupron for humans, the dosage is way too high! I was looking for animal hospitals or clinics in the area that supply the Lupron Depot (this is different than the 24 hr. one) I don't feel comfortable giving the shots (at least for the first few times. Ive already looked everywhere except calll down a phonebook. I hope you can help me.

Answer

This is what you go to a compounding pharmacy for - to get the human meds dosed down correctly for a smaller animal.

There isn't a veterinary drug its the human drug dosed down.

That first pharmacy I gave you was one that has done mailorder compounding and sales of the med for ferret owners but any compounding pharmacy should be able to make a correct dose up for you if you have a vet prescription.

This site lists pharmacies in your state and includes the info on which ones do compounding so you could ask them directly

http://www.cpi-ind.com/pharmacy.html

I had to go about 20 miles to get to a compounding pharmacy to make up specialized doses of meds for my animals who needed human drugs for various illness situations where the meds did not come in the right dose for them.

Ok, one last thing, I am a bit nervous about injecting her. Where would I do it, I m afraid i'd hurt her

Accepted Answer

Once you get the med have your vet show you how to do injections or have the vet do them. Your vet will have to be involved as you will need prescriptions for the meds.
