Question

I am a 40 year old caucasion woman. About 4 weeks ago, I started with left ear pain, small lymph node enlarged behind ear, jaw and cheek pain Two weeks later I had a left lower molar become sensitive ( zaps of nerve pain). The tooth was filled but it had a crack near the pulp. I had tests for lymph node. No significant findings on that. After filling, tooth hurt still. I chose to have it extracted. I am now 8 days post op. I still have pain in my ear, jaw and area of extraction. It is still swollen around gums. Do I have pain from extraction or some kind of TMJ or trigeminal neuralgia. I think it's difficult for everyone to know for sure? I never had an injury to my face nor had a history of this problem. Your opinion?

Dear XXXXXXXX,
Hello.I suggest that the chances of your pain being of dental origin are quite high.Since the oedema and injury to the part(post-extraction) has still not settled, please give it another week for the pain to die down.A TMJ problem would be more in front of the ear and will be aggravated after chewing some hard food.Further, the swollen lymph node suggests local infection, which is more likely to be of dental origin.Trigeminal neuralgia is a shrp, lancinating pain, which would also be transmitted to the tongue/upper lip/temple depending on the brach involved. Please also rule out ear infection.
