I was driving my 1998 BMW 540i in heavy rain 2 weeks ago. The wipers were on hi-speed. The passenger side wiper abruptly stopped mid wipe. The drivers side continued to work riding over the passenger arm. I stopped & disabled the passenger arm by pushing it down under the hood. The drivers side continued operating normally for 2 days. I removed the passenger wiper arm at my destination. The 2 spindles threads that lead to the passenger wiper arm from the motor are fine. 1 passenger wiper arm spindle is stripped inside. the other is fine. Will replacing the passenger arm assembly solve the problem? how is the passenger wiper connected to the drivers wiper?

Answer

It depends if the wiper arm stripped or if the spindle that the wiper goes on is stripped. Usually the easiest way to fix this is take a washer, put it underneath the wiper to take up slack and tighten tight. Here are instructions to remove wiper. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks

Driver's side:
Remove cover.

Unfasten nut and remove wiper arm.

Installation note.
Note tightening torque.

If necessary, remove shim with special tool 61 6 000.

Installation note.
Screw shim and wiper arm onto shaft. Check approach angle to windshield with adjustment gauge 00 9 230 and, if necessary, adjust position of wiper arm with shim.

Remove cover.

Remove both arms with special tool 61 6 000.
