Question

My husband suffered a TBI 3 years ago. Within the past year, he has become very paranoid and has even had hallucinations. He now believes that I am trying to convince him that he has gone crazy to cover up infedelity, which never happened. What can I do to help him recover from this paranoia? We are seeing a counselor but that only seems to make it worse.

Answer

XXXXXXXXX,

Does your husband have follow-up appointments with the neurologist? I would suggest that you try to contact this doctor and let him/her know what's happening. Scheduling a follow-up with the neurologist would probably feel less threatening to your husband than going to counseling, so he might be more readily agreeable to it. Also, if this doctor knows ahead of time what your concerns are, he/she could make a referral to a psychiatrist for medication treatment if this were necessary- that way the suggestion would be coming from the doctor rather than from you and thus might be easier for your husband to hear and accept.
