Question

My dishwasher is not draining so I quit using it for several weeks. This morning I used a lot of water cleaning dishes and found water is backdraining into the dishwasher tub. Where do I start to try to remedy this myself?

Thank you for any assistance you might be able to offer.

Diane

Answer

Hi Diane
If you have a garbage disposal try running the disposal if it hasn't been used recently. Disposals need to be run periodically to keep them clear whether you have garbage to grind up or not. If you don't have a disposal then the first place to look for a stoppage would be the trap under the kitchen sink. If your trap is plastic (white or black) there should be a threaded plug at the bottom of the U shaped part of the trap. You need to unscrew the plug. You need to turn it clockwise from the perspective of looking down on it. Once the trap plug is out carefully stick you finger into the trap and pull out anything you find. You can also use a wire coat hanger with a small hook bent in the end to get the junk out. When the trap is clear put the plug back (wrap some teflon tape around the threads first) and see if the water drains out. If it doesn't then the line will need to be snaked out, something you should probably hire out.
If the trap is metal (brass or chrome) the method is the same BUT if you see any corrosion don't attempt to take it apart. It will probably fall apart if you do.

I do have a disposal which is run almost daily - coffee grounds...so should I start at the trap?

Accepted Answer

Yes open up the trap. If insufficient water is used while running the disposal then what you grind up will stay in the trap
