Question

My 8-month old Ragdoll kitty burned his paw on the kitten stove three months ago. The sore on his paw healed over, but he is now always a very sick kitty. He's been to the veterinarian over and over again. I've spent nearly $2,000.00 dollars trying to figure out what's wrong and nobody can find anything. He's not an outside kitty, there seems to be no vomiting, he only eats baby food (of which he can't get enough). His biggest symptoms are that he lays around alot but can't seem to get comfortable. Also, a strange thing that occurs sometimes is a slight shaking of his head. I can't figure out what is wrong with him. Please help me. He's had a couple of x-rays now. This last one only showed that he had alot of excess air in his tummy and around the fecal balls. I don't he is constipated. The vet didn't give me anything to treat him, just thought I should take him to the University of Minnesota where they can maybe do some Neurological testing. I don't have ANY money for that.

Optional Information

Age: <1; Male; Breed: Ragdoll

Already Tried:
He was given a Pennecillan shot at the start of his problems, then was taken to the emergency pet hospital for a work up. Nothing showed up but it was decided to treat him with Metronizodole and Clavomox for the possibility of Tetanus. He seemed to respond to these pretty well. When his supply of these were done he became sick again. I went to my local vet and was given more clavamox. When this was done he was showing his poor symptoms again. I went to the vet again because when I came home from work one day because he was laying in a corner in a tight ball and it was looking as though he was pushing. He was treated with another antibiotic and AD food for possible crystals in his urine. The vet had examined him and found that blood came out very easy when she worked his penis. The new antibiotic seemed to help him for a while, but then he went back to his symptoms. I decided that I wanted him to have another x-ray so I could be sure nothing was missed the first time. The doctor said it looked like everything was okay except for alot of excess air in his stomach and fecal balls. He wasn't given any treatment this time. Just a referral on to the University of Minnesota. I have no money for this. It seems that all this stemmed from him jumping on the stove and burning his paw. Did he hit some nerve or something that is causing problems in his body? You know he is going through a "bad spell" when you look at his eyes - they are wide and black. He lays around alot and can't seem to get comfortable. And he really doesn't sleep either, just lays there curled up staring at you with his big eyes. He got really thin too. I'm trying to remedy this by giving him chicken or turkey baby food. He loves these!!! I'm sure there is some info I missed. But please help me. I do have other cats and I've never seen anything like this before. Thank you, Jessica

Hi there,

How long has your boy eating baby food?

How does he act "uncomfortable"?

Thanks,

Terri

I would say I started feeding him babyfood a little over a month ago. He acts uncomfortable by laying around alot, curled up tight, trying to cuddle "needily" with another kitty or rests his head on my leg. His eyes are huge and black.

Hi Jessie,

I am sorry your boy is not feeling well. Burns are a severe shock to the body. It is possible he has Tetanus or an infection.

You will see such a wide eyed gaze in megasophagus as well:

QUOTE FROM ABOVE

Cervical ventroflexion is a dramatic sign of generalized neuromuscular weakness in cats. The chin usually rests near the thoracic inlet, with the eyes positioned dorsally to maintain a straight-ahead gaze. Other common physical examination findings are a slight protrusion of the dorsal aspects of the scapulae when weight is placed on thoracic limbs, and a stiff thoracic limb gait. A crouched, wide based stance is often seen in pelvic limbs. Possible causes to consider for this posture are: subacute or chronic organophosphate toxicity, potassium-depletion myopathy, thiamine-responsive neuromuscular weakness, hyperthyroidism, immune-mediated (idiopathic) polymyositis, myasthenia gravis, polyneuropathy, hypernatremic polymyopathy, ammonium chloride toxicity, hereditary myopathies (Burmese, Devon Rex), hypocalcemia, and portosystemic encephalopathy.

Myasthenia Gravis:

Consider treating with Pred and ace.

Your boy alson need more nutrition than baby food can provide. Add a high quality canned cat food like Inova,, wellness, Evo or nutro.

Please let me know how he is doing.

Best wishes for him,

Terri
