Question

A sports analyst claims that the mean batting average for teams in the American League is greater than the mean batting average for teams in the National League because the pitcher does not bat in the American League. The data listed below are from randomly selected teams in both leagues. At a

American League

0.279   0.274   0.271   0.268   0.265   0.254   0.240

National League

0.284   0.267   0.266   0.263   0.261   0.259   0.256
= 0.05, test the sports analyst's claim. Assume the populations are normal and that the population variances are not equal.

Answer

Dear XXXXXXXX,

H0: mu1=mu2
Ha: mu1>mu2

Test statistic: -0.12
p-value -- 0.545

So there is not enough evidence to suggest that the american league is greater than the national league.

Accepted Answer

Right. Got it:

The sample averages:

American: 0.2644
National: 0.26514

At this point, we don't need to go any further because we see that the batting average for the American league is less than that of the National league. Hence we have no evidence that the American League has a higher batting average. In fact, we have at least some evidence of the opposite.
