Question

My daughter's 9 year old male siamese cat for the last 3 months has been urinating all over

the house; on top of the dresser, refrigerator, kitchen counters, kitchen sink, on her lap top,

and I could go on and on.

She did have him checked out to be sure there was no infection, etc. It is a multi cat household

3 others being males. But this only started. She is at her wits end and doesn't know what to

do.
Can you help and tell us what could be causing such a change?

Already Tried:

She first took him to her vet to be sure he wasn't sick.
she has thoroughly cleaned the entire house where he is

Hi there and thanks for your question.

This is definitely a frustrating problem! You have already done the first step I usually recommend and that is to make sure there isn't a medical cause. If the urine tests were clear then this is not an infection or crystals. However, if the cat has not had any bloodwork done this is a good idea to do. Sometimes a hidden health problem such as a thyroid issue can cause stress which could bring this type of problem on.

However, if the tests come back as normal then this is a behavioural issue. Some cats will urinate in inappropriate places because of stress, but often it is hard to find the source of stress. The first thing I would do is if possible, restrict his access to the areas he is doing this.

I would also advise getting a new litter box as sometimes odours can collect in a box we have used for years. If you have more than one cat then you should have a litter box for each cat, plus one extra. Do your best to clean these every day. If you have a covered litter box, get rid of the cover as many cats hate the odours that are in these boxes.

If all of this is done and he is still doing it then you can talk to your vet about medicine to help reduce his stress level such as amitryptilline.

You may also want to look into a product called Feliway. This comes in either a spray or a plug in diffuser. It diffuses a feline pheromone which has been proven to help reduce stress levels. However, it is a little pricey.
