Question

I'm considering a 2004 Land Rover HSE w/67K miles for $22,800 . Here are my questions:

Is this good value if car checks out?
What should I look for? The car is is good shape but I can see under the hood, a loose engine cover and some rewiring done.
Do you need premium fuel or can you get by with mid-grade?
What service is required at 60,000 miles?
How much does this typically cost?

Answer

Hi XXXXXXXX,
My name is XXXX, X am a Land Rover tech.
It looks like you have 5 questions here. Let me start at the top and work down.
(1) Price wise it seems to be priced ok if it is in good shape like you say.

(2) Things to look for on this truck are, coolant leaks, these like to leak from the radiator, water pump, coolant bottle, rear engine cover, top engine cover, in other words they are known for coolant leaks. Another thing to watch for is the front air springs leak and cause suspension faulty. The other common problem is the pcv system, the hoses for this system run across the back of the engine under the cover and they deteriorate and cause the system to plug up. These are the most common problems associated with this truck. As far as the rewiring goes that is really hard to say because it may have just been a wire repair. There is a recall out for the front drive shaft to be changed to a different style so you should make sure this is done also.

(3) As far as the premium fuel, you can run mid grade with no problems.

(4) The 60,000 mile service consist of the oil change, air filter, spark plugs, fresh air filter, rotate wheels, coolant flush and read any fault codes in the vehicle.

(5) Our dealer charges 950.00 for this service.

Kind Regards,
Rich

Hi Rich,

Thanks so much. A few points of clarification. Can you provide additional detail on the front drive shaft recall? Is there a reference number?

Is the coolant leaking recurrent even after repaired? We're very concerned as we live in HOT Houston.

Any braking issues?

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,
No braking issues, just normal wear.
The recall number is Q041, one way to tell if it has been done is to look at the front drive shaft where it connects to the front differential, if it has 6 bolts attaching it to the differential then the recall has been done.
As far as the coolant leaks, once the parts have been replaced, such as the radiator, the recurrence is not as frequent. Life on the radiators seems to be 40,000 miles or so, longer on the other components. I am in Florida so our temps are warm as well.

Kind Regards,
Rich
