Question

Our 17 year old Scottish Fold has developed a lump just under her lip. It appears to be growing at a slow rate. We took her to a vet when we first found it -- she said it was hard and she believed it was cancerous. As we've lost two cats at vet's offices when they were under anesthesia, we're looking for other alternatives. The cat also has a lumpy stomach, but frankly she always has. The lump now feels relatively soft to the touch and she pulls back when it's touched -- though she doesn't cry or run away. Other than that, her behavior is normal. She plays, her tail is in the air, and she's eating normally if not even more than normal. Your thoughts?

Just observing her. And taking her to the vet who said to watch her. We're heading out of the country in three weeks for a two week business trip and are worried about her prognosis.

Hi Sheri,

I would not even think think about submitting a 17 year old for surgery. It may be a benign cyst, due to a bad tooth, or lipoma. Even if it is Cancer (God forbid) it is best to leave it alone unless she has difficulty eating.

A needle biopsy is not exceptionally invasive if you really want to know what this is.

I can tell you that if she were mine I would just let well enough alone. She sounds like she is happy, well and doing great.

Since it is slow growing I don't think three weks will change her prognosis.

I hope your baby will be fine.

Best wishes for her,

Terri
