Question

I have a 2003 FX140 that only has 66 hours on it. Last season I struggled to get it running, replaced the spark plugs, battery, air filter. It would turn over and then die out. Then continue to turn over but never catch. My assumption was the fuel lines or fuel injectors are clogged, so after it sat for 8 months in my garage (I live in Northern California ... no snow), I took it to a local repair shop. The mechanic told me the engine froze up and won't crank at all. he spent a couple hours trying to diagnose the problem, even calling Yamaha. Yamaha told him that if you remove the plugs on a 4 stroke it shouldn't freeze up. The mechanic explained that he needed about 3-4 hours of labor just to get to the Starter Box (???) because this can cause the engine to sieze up. Is this even close to true? Candidly, I was so frustrated that he was telling me there was a major problem with my waverunner after so few hours put on it. Any thoughts?

Hello XXXXXXXX,

Here are some things to check. First, charge the battery and load test it to be sure it is good. Remove the sparkplugs from the engine and reinstall them in the caps then let them lay against the cylinder head. Lay a towel across the top of the engine. Try cranking the engine briefly to see if it turns over and if it does water may shoot out of the sparkplug holes. If the engine turns over and there is no sign of water that is good. It means that your initial assumption about a fuel problem is probably correct. If the engine does not turn over but the solenoid clicks Then the problem could be in the starter, the engine or the jet pump. The jet pump just unbolts and slides off the rear of the boat. With the pump off check that the pump shaft rotates smoothly. If good try rotating the engine by turning the driveshaft. If the engine rotates then the problem is with the starter. That still leaves you with the initial running problem that you are going to have to repair but at least you have determined wether or not the engine is siezed.

If this answer was helpful please click accept and leave positive feedback.
