Question

Why is my Dog coughing like this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76Rd4t8N1Ug

My dog has been coughing like for a few days now. It happens every 30-60 minutes, whether he's inside or outside. He's a 7-year old American Eskimo. He has no history of any major illnesses. He's primarily an outdoor dog. He also sleeps outdoors (unless its very cold). Here are some facts. I live in Los Angeles, California. I recently put wood chips in my backyard as ground cover, though no one who's been there has experienced any coughing. I still can't tell if its a flu type cough or choking. He vomited once a few days ago, but that's the only time he's vomited. Can anyone help tell me why he's coughing like this. I plan on taking him to the vet this weekend if I can't figure out why.

Answer

Hi there and thanks for your question.

Unfortunately the link to your youtube video did not work for me.

However, I'll see if I can still help. If your dog is coughing and sounding like he is trying to choke something up (or like he has something stuck in his throat) then the most common reason is a viral cough such as kennel cough. Kennel cough can be spread through the air and your dog doesn't have to necessarily be in direct contact with an infected dog to get it.

The good news is that most dogs with kennel cough will get over it on their own in about 7-10 days. However, if the cough is really bad then often I will prescribe a cough suppressant to help reduce the coughing.

If you are noticing a lack of appetite or a green or yellow nasal discharge then this means the cough may have progressed to a bacterial infection in which case antibiotics may be necessary.

There are other causes for coughing including a heart condition, heartworm or a fungal infection in the chest. However, from what you have described I think kennel cough sounds most likely.

I hope this information helps! If you have more questions regarding this problem, just hit reply. If I am online I will respond right away. Otherwise I will respond as soon as I come online again. Or, if my answer is sufficient, then please hit accept. Thanks!
Dr. Marie.

The above is given for information only. Although I am a licensed veterinarian, I cannot legally prescribe medicines or diagnose your pet's condition without performing a physical exam. If you have concerns about your pet I would highly advise contacting your regular veterinarian.

Answer

Ah, ok...I was able to watch the video this time.

It certainly does sound like it could be kennel cough. If he is coughing to this extreme every 30-60 minutes it is probably a good idea to have your vet see him so that they can prescribe some medication to help.

Your vet will also do an exam and feel his trachea to see if this elicits the cough which is typical of kennel cough. While there is a small possibility of a problem in the esophagus or some type of small foreign object in the trachea I think a viral cough is most likely.

My concern is that he is gaggin and trying to vomit, as you'll notice in the video towards the end. Is this a symptom of kennel cough? Also, I also sprayed some raid bug spray in the front of the house where he sometimes hangs out. Could that have been any cause?

Accepted Answer

It is very much a symptom of kennel cough. Usually the first complaint I get from owners of a dog with kennel cough is that their dog sounds like there is something stuck in his throat.

It is quite unlikley to be due to the bug spray.
