Question

I have a mixed small dog which was born in November 2008. Yesterday, he started gagging with nothing coming out. He is usually perky and playful but today, he is laying down but still following me everywhere. He is stretching his front legs out like he is taking a bow like you do after a performance. I do not know what to do. He is making his normal bowel movements. Help

Answer

Hello,

If your dog was gagging, but not vomiting anything up yesterday, and today your puppy is more lethargic than usual, it's possible that he may have ingested a non-food or toxic substance, which has irritated his throat and/or digestive tract.

The stretching out of his front paws, like he's 'bowing' may be related to a tracheal (windpipe) or breathing problem, or pain in his stomach; it may also indicate a back problem. This breed (toy poodle) is also prone to develop dislocated kneecaps (slipped stifle) and this may related to what you're seeing, so it would be a good idea to have your puppy evaluated in person by a vet, immediately, to find the cause of his symptoms, and have him treated so he's feeling more comfortable.

I hope all will be well with your dog, once he's diagnosed and treated by the vet.

I do not have the money right now to do this, Is there anything else I can give him. Right now he is looking out the window barking at the mail lady.

Hi again, and thanks for your reply.

If you don't have the money to bring him to the vet, try applying for Care Credit online, and you could get an instant decision (www.carecredit.com); this is a credit card you can use for vet visits and medications, to help you pay out the fee in installments.

Also, you can contact your local Humane Society, ASPCA, and Dog Rescue Orgs to ask for help in finding a lower-cost vet or one who will see your dog free of charge.

For the moment, make sure he continues to eat, drink and eliminate as usual, and encourage him to drink fresh water. You might consult your vet to ask if you can give him 1/4-1 tablet of Pepcid AC or Tagamet, if stomach acid may be causing his problem. Acid reflux could have contributed to his gagging, yesterday. Never give your dog any over the counter medication without first consulting your vet who knows your dog's medical history.
