Question

16 months ago I co-signed for a friend to get an apartment for a month to month rental. If I send a letter to the management of the apartment requesting them to withdraw my name as co signer, Do they have to take my name off the rental agreement. If not , Am I on the hook for years to come?

Optional Information

San Diego, California

Already Tried:
I have not contacted anyone at this time. I just would like to remove myself from any potential obligations down the road. I think I filled my friendly obligation and he has lived there more than a year with no late payments or negative issues.

Accepted Answer

I am very afraid you are on the hook here. They likely wont release you and if the tenant defaults you could be sued. In turn you would be able to sue the tenant for 100% contribution.
