Question

I have found that several layers of newspaper covered by pine straw or mulch really does a good job of discouraging weeds. Can I do this around irises? Will it affect their spread? Why or why not, so I'll have another piece of gardening knowledge.

Thanks a ton. Penny

Thank you for using Just Answer!

It is not recommended to do this around the base of the irises because the irises are very susceptible to root rot. Having well drained soil is very important to avoid this from happening. The several layers of newspapers and mulch is going to hold moisture because they are both absorbant materials. It is also recommended that you do not mulch at all during the growing season of the iris.

Even though the newspapers are effective in controlling the weeds it would be best to stick with the thin black weed barrier that allows water to drain away easily.
