Question

I have a 1999 mercury 90hp motor on a 1720 Key West. I ran into a sand bar doing about 20 mph. The motor started but would only run at 2000 rpms or less. Once I exceeded that the motor would abruptly stop. I limped home and put the boat on my trailer for maint. What can I do to check out the problem? Is it pluff mud in the motor cooling system or have I screwed up the gears in the foot ?

welcome to JA

You need to flush the cooling system out from thermostat down

you need to pull water pump and get sand out of there

you could have sheared the flywheel key also, you need to check timing

also if prop is damaged that could be most of the problem also
