Question

Hello. My house is located in Kingwood Texas and was built in 1982. Recently, my roofer put a nail through my AC copper line. He stated that since it was on the roof line in the attic that it was not up to proper code. He cited the Southern States Code. He refused to pay the 350.00 to have the system recharged. What can you tell me? Is he right about the code? Also, where can I find this code online for further explanation?

Answer

I can not quote the code for texas however I agree that having a line set up against the roof so close that a roofing nail can go thru it ...those nails are short.....is not correct... that being said I would counter offer and see if the roofer won't take some responsibility and perhaps pay half. My guess is there would be another excuse if this code thing were not available. If I have answered you ? please hit accept

Answer

I would contact your local code enforcement and ask for the mechanical division. They will be able to tell you if your lines were not installed to code for your area. Sounds like the roofer is trying to skip out on a repair he should be responsible for to me. Thanks

Answer

The answer isn't whether it was up to code the roofer should have taken the time to see what was under the roof. He didn't and shame on him. He assumed there was nothing there, that his nails would hit and guessed wrong make him pay.
