Question

Hello! My St. Bernard suddenly lost almost of his mobility in both hind legs - the right leg seems to be affected more so. We think he slipped on our laminate stairs - he did not fall - on Saturday. Prior to Saturday, he had a bit of a sore right leg - i.e. it appearred to be stiff. We took him to our vet who checked for a cruchiate ligament tear - he is fairly certain that this is not the problem. Our vet also took x-rays of Kauai's spine - no fractures or blatant problems. He prescribed Rimadyl and rest and said Kauai probably has IVDD. Kauai was still able to move his hind legs on Monday morning but required a towel sling to get up and walk. His hind leg movement has not improved, if anything, the hind legs are moving less and less. He is also "knuckling" on both hind legs which the vet indicated points toward neurological problems - probably IVDD. This condition appearred very suddenly. The vet indicated that surgery to relieve compression may be an option. Thoughts?

Info Request

Sorry to hear that Kauai is having this issue :( When Kauai is at rest, can he feel you touching his back feet at all?

Hello! I would say no - I just tried tickling his paw pads and there was no reaction. As well, when he is lying down, his hind legs are sticking straight out. When he walks with the towel sling, he is knuckling.

Answer

OK, thanks for the information. I would strongly recommend not allowing this condition to progress any further without consulting a veterinary surgeon or neurologist, regarding back surgery. When feeling is lost, that means there's significant compression of the nerves in the spinal cord. This compression is unlikely to be alleviated by anti-inflammatories alone.

Thank you for your response. In your opinion, if Kauai's condition worsened suddenly on Sunday night/Monday morning - will surgery help to improve his condition? If yes, is there a preferred window of time for the surgery - all articles I have read have indicated the sooner the better with the best being within 24 hours of the incident.

Accepted Answer

If there's still "deep pain perception" (meaning, if you really pinch the toes with all your strength, he feels it), then surgery is still worth a try. If there's no deep pain perception, then the prognosis is grave :(

The rule is definitely "the sooner the better" -- time is critical when it comes to managing spinal injuries.
