Question

The verdict on whether or not Provigil does or does not contain gluten via pregelatinized starch appears mixed. Any info. on this? I have Celiac's and don't want to glutenize myself, obviously, by taking Provigil. Any info. on Canadian preperations--I understand many if not all Canadian pharmacueticals are gluten-free?

Answer

Hello,

Thank you for your question.

According to the drug database that I use this does contain pregelatinized starch. I cannot comment on Canadian preparations but the following is a direct excerpt from my drug database.

"Modafinil is a white to off-white, crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water and cyclohexane. It is sparingly to slightly soluble in methanol and acetone. PROVIGIL tablets contain 100 mg or 200 mg of modafinil and the following inactive ingredients: lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, croscarmellose sodium, povidone, and magnesium stearate."

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, it did not address the question: does the pregelatinized starch in provigil contain enough gluten to pose a problem for someone with Celiac's? Your answer merely confirmed what I already knew, ie, that provigil contains pregelatinized starch. Again, thank you for your efforts. Further research seems to indicate that some current preperations of provigil do not contain pregelatinized starch but cornstarch, which doesn't seem to pose a problem for Celiac's.
