Question

I have a Gateway 7200X, it now starts up for about 10 seconds and it has a message on the screen "Digital Power Saving Mode" then shuts down. Changed out the power supply but didn't help. Any ideas?

I brought my computer home. Pressing F1, F2 or Del during run up has no effect.

Since you have already replaced the power supply, can you also make sure that the processor heat sink/ fan assembly is clean ?

Yes, the fans work. I blew the whole computer out with an air compressor. I have to pull the pwr cord off the back for a 30 seconds or so before plugging the cord back in, the fans kick on again for a few seconds.

Answer

When the system turns itself off after a few seconds, 90% of time, it is due to overheating.

The system is turning itself off to prevent damage to the processor. However there can be other problems too.

To test the issue,

1 Disconnect all the addition components like Hard drive, CD drive etc.
2 Disconnect any device connected to any of the USB ports

Now try to turn it on and let me know

Do you get any video after starting the computer or it just turns off without displaying anything

All it displays is "Digital Pwr Saving Mode".

Accepted Answer

It is probably displayed by the monitor to indicate that there is no video signal from the computer.

The next step will be to apply Thermal compoud on the processor.

It will make sure that the heat from the processor is properly transmitted to the heat sink.

The following video will provide some idea

But let me be very honest with you. It seems to be a severe problem and the chances are that, there is some problem with the motherboard.

However, there is no harm in trying to eliminate the other possibilites first.

Please let me know how it goes
