Question

Brand new 20hp will not start but cranks over. I pulled a spark plug and there is fuel but no spark. The lanyard is in the correct position.

Hi. I was just wondering if this is a new motor & has a warranty, I'd be taking it back to the dealer. If you want to try it yourself, please let me know what brand of motor & a model & serial number would help me. How long have you owned it & if you were ever able to run it prior, just looking for some history etc... to help me help you. Please get back to me, Thanks.

Thanks Tom - it is a brand new Honda 20hp motor with remote trim and tilt. I don't have serial number at the moment. The dealer tells me it ran at the dealership and blames me that it doesn't run now. I unplugged both harnesses which are quick disconnects and plugged them back in. Mike

Hi Mike. I'm sorry that the dealer told you that, I would be calling the Honda factory about that, but I will try to help you without them. If this is electric start & you are sure you have no ignition spark & the safety lanyard is on. You either have a defective ignition system, ignition switch or safety lanyard & that is a warranty issue. Let's make sure thou that you do have spark & the motor is not flooded. Pull the spark plugs out & hook them back up to the ignition wires & with the plugs touching the engine block crank the motor & observe to see if there is spark & if there is not you need to take the motor back to dealer or another dealer or call Honda.
