i have a 77 70hp johnson. it cuts out and dies when you hit the throttle but idles fine and runs fine with the warm up lever. i was told to check end clean the carb jets and that didnt solve my problem is there something else that could be wrong? it also runs fine out of the water without a load on it.

Answer

Hi. You need to check this in the water, a motor will seem to run fine out of the water on muffs, but you need to put a load on it. First make sure you have good spark on all cylinders & if you have not checked the compression I need you to do so . If that is ok take the boat out on the water & start to give it throttle & as it starts to act up & die click the choke & see if that improves the running & if it does you still have a lean running problem. The other thing I want you to do is pump the primer bulb on the fuel line to make sure it's not running out of fuel. I hope this helps. Please click accept. If I can be of further help please contact me. Good luck & Thanks.

Hi. It does not seem like a lean running fuel issue, could be a rich running. The other thing to check is the ignition timing is advancing, when you push the throttle down the timer base under the flywheel should move an inch or so, (which advances the timing, if the timing does not advance it could cause this problem). The other thing is the carb's need to be adjusted to open at the same time with the timing advancing. (should have a service manual to set that up.) I hope this helps, Good luck & Thanks.
