Question

Have a 94 astro awd. While driving at night it dies. No lights, no fuel pump, no motor, no horn. 10 seconds later lights come back on and it starts and goes fine. Day 2 it happens again, Day 3 it does it again 70 miles away. Day 4 it dies and does not come back. No lights, no fuel pump noise, no horn, but it does turn over well. Is this a relay or circuit breaker problem? If so, where is it found? The fusable links behind battery seem strong and in good shape when I pull on them.

Answer

hi

this may be a problem with your main hot wire that connects to the starter along side the pos, battery cable...you may need to drop the starter to check this

Dear Sir,
Not helpful. I ended up breaking a starter bolt checking a starter that I said still worked fine; also; as I stated in my letter; the lights, fuel pump, and horn came back on 3 times before finally quitting for good. Note that I'm not blaming yiou for the bolt but your answer doesn't fit. Wires don't come back on that way.
I want to know if there is a circuit breaker, relay, computer or something else that can shut off headlights, fuel pump, and horn; then turn them back on all the while the starter itself is unaffected.
This seems to be a fairly common problem since others have experienced it and have posted it on the internet. I just can't find out how they solved the problem.

Answer

Hello XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, my suggestion is look at this diagram. Look for where the fusible links in this diagram go from the battery downward. My suspicion is that you have a bad or dirty connection in this area. This point would affect all the items that are affected on your truck.

Ivan,
Been looking at the diagram and can't find which line goes to the fuel pump. Also, what is the bat box below the battery?

I'm thinking the Bat box is a battery junction block. Follow the starter wire and it should lead you right to it. As far as the fuel pump wiring, it is fed from fuse ECMB which is a 15 amp fuse and located on that diagram. Here is the complete fuel pump diagram
