Question

hello my bunny is about 7mths old and we rescued her from a box in a skip when she was about 6wks. she is an indoor bunny with her own room and 1 dog and 2 cats which all get on very well with her. recently she is ripping up newspaper and taking straw from her hutch and pulling out fluffy fur ( she is a mini lop) and making what can only be described as a nest in the corner of the room. it has only happened a few weeks ago and i have not removed it in case she does it again but she doesnt even bother with it now. is it a sign i should get her neutered or just put it down to bunny behaviour- i havent had a bunny before but couldnt bear her being given to kids who would keep her in a cage once they got bored. please advice- many thanks- sarah-jayne

Hello,

You're right that your rabbit is building a nest. Female rabbits pull hair from their chests (and sometimes the abdomen, too) and put it in their bedding to make a soft nest. since your rabbit has been alone, she can't be pregnant. That means she's exhibiting signs of a false pregnancy. Sometimes this happens to unspayed females for no apparent reason. Other times, an underlying health problem is to blame. Hormone imbalances, uterine infections, and tumors or cysts on the ovaries or other reproductive organs can trigger such behavior. You can read more about false pregnancy here

If you're rabbit is undergoing a false pregnancy, you'll want to take her to a vet to rule out health problems. This isn't an emergency situation, so you don't need to do that right away. spaying would take care of the problem.
