Question

Our cat is 16 years old, she has just recently began to drop weight very quickly. She is nothing but skin and bones now. We try to feed her but she has no desire to eat. We noticed the last couple of days that her breathing is becoming very labored and becomes worse by the day. What would you suggest?

Answer

Good Morning,

It sounds like your girl could have developed a heart problem or a thyroid problem. Unfortunately I am leaning towards a heat condition..which needs care right away.

Also, since she is not eating, (most cats with thyroid issues eat a LOT) it is even more important to have her evaluated right away so that she can get fluids and the vet can get nourishment in her. A cat that does not eat is at risk for liver issues that are treatable but take a long time to recover from.

I urge you to have her seen today if you can. Please let me know how it goes!

Warmest Wishes,
Reani
