Hello XXXXXX.
The DME's can be switched bank to bank. There is an extra ground in one of the DME connectors to differentiate the banks.
If you are not able to communicate with the DMEs I would check all the fuses in the E-box. If they are ok make sure you are getting power to the DMEs.
If you can provide me with the last seven digits of your VIN it would be helpful.
Thanks
Scott
The VIN is dh66650. The DME's are getting power, I completely removed the engine wiring harness and checked each and every wire going to the DME's and EML, they all checked out fine. I have a pinout of the DME's and they are getting power and ground where they are suppose to. If I switch the DME's from one bank to another I no longer get spark or fuel.
Ok thanks Brad.
I will look over the wiring diagrams and other information and get back to you later today.
Hi Brad.
I think you need to get the car scanned by compatible equipment. If you have power everywhere it should be you should be able to communicate. The 12cyls are extremely complicated beasts and are difficult to diagnose with BMW equipment. The EMLs were problematic as well as the EML controller. It is odd that you lose spark when you witch DMEs since they are the same part. I would double check your DME powers and grounds and also check the diagnostic connector for good connections.
I have checked all the grounds and powers right up to the DME and everything is good, the EML I can communicate with. I also cannot communicate with a obd II scanner, It say no communication available. I am using INPA, and as soon as I get a larger hdd I will setup DIS and Progman. Do you know why when I switch the DME the system no longer works. Would you be able to get a hold or any schematics of the DME's.
P.S. If I pay you now would you continue to help with this problem.
Thanks Brad
I will get the wiring diagrams together and send them later.
Hey Brad. I have not been able to get the wiring diagrams in a format that I can share them with you. I will try again tomorow when I get to work but I do not think I will have any success. I find it very strange that swapping dmes makes you lose spark. They should be identical. Are you sure you have spark on both banks?
Yes I physically pull the spark plugs down both sides and do get spark and fuel, plus periodically I check spark with a timing light. I also with a test light check the fuel injectors and the light flashes when cranking. When I switch the DME's I get nothing out of either side. I tried switching them originally because I have no idea what the previous owner or his mechanic did.

Are there any labels on the DMEs?
Hey Brad.
I am unable to get the wiring diagrams in a format that I can put on here, sorry. I asked about the DME labels to see if they were the original DMEs. I was wondering if you were having an EWS issue. The EWS connects to both DMEs so swapping them should not change anything there.
Are you connecting to the car through the OBD connector or the 20 pin round connector under the hood?
Hi, To tell you the truth I dont even know if they are original, because when I started looking at the DMEs the covers just about came off, so someone has been inside them. I would agree with EWS but I am getting spark and fuel, just not when I switch them. I am using the 20 pin diagnostic connecter, the obd II connector is about useless. Dont worry about the wiring diagrams, I have WDS 12, I was looking for diagrams on the DME's themselves.
I am stumped on this. I do not understand why you do not have communication with the DMEs. If you have all the powers and grounds and can communicate with everything else, you should be able to with the DMEs too. If you only connect them one at a time does it make a difference?
No, I tried doing each one seperaly on both banks and then switched them. I tried doing with the headlights and with the GM disconnected. I tried with inpa, ediabas, carsoft 6.5, and with an obd II scanner. I just bought a different DME off ebay, I want to see if I can connect to that one when it gets here. I know because of EWS I cannot physically use it. I was wondering if there is a way, if I get a different 88 pin connector if I can set it up to bench test it. See without being able to get into it I cannot find out the Vin or production year, but then you know that. I just remembered the one thing that I could do, which I'm sorry I did now, is I was able to erase the adaption values.
Have you tried unplugging the airflow meters and seeing if it will tun?
I am out of ideas Brad. I really think you have a DME issue. The no communication and the way it changes when you swap them is very odd. I have seen these engines run on 1 bank. They even run suprisingly well on one bank.
I am willing to continue to help you if you have specific questions.
Is there anyway to bypass the EWS temporarily to try another DME.
No, you cannot bypass the EWS. The DME needs the EWS to release it to allow spark and fuel. If you could bypass the EWS it would lessen its effectiveness. The only way to get arund the EWS-DME pairing is to temporarily plug in the EWS form the DME donor car and you would need a key from that car as well.

Thats what I thought. If you think of anything else please let me know beelite1 at hotmail.
Thanks for your time.
Thanks Brad.
Good luck, if I think of anything I will let you know.
