Question
I brought my E34 to a shop to have some fluid leaks fixed. They replaced the rear main seal, and both front and back transmission seals. Now my car makes noise from the transmission that it never made before they worked on it.
It increases in pitch with vehicle speed but not engine speed or when shifting. I assume it is a power train mount or final drive problem, and want to know if it is possible they mishandled the transmission when working on it or if I will have to pay for a new transmission.
After spending $1500 with this shop, and having it in to them three times for this same noise (they told me the first time there was a rock in the heat shield, which I believe was untrue) I am hesitant to go back to their shop unless I can definitely say it was something they did and need to repair. What are your thoughts?

I don't have a lot of money and am feeling like I got taken by the repair shop. I tried bringing it back to them, but the noise is intermittent and goes away after reaching faster speeds, then returns the next day. Is it unsafe to drive? Should I demand they fix something? I'm desperate...I have no job, and only get a small disability income. My entire months money went to them already. Is the final drive or the power train mount something I could do myself? If not, what should it cost?

Answer
I would recomend taking it to a BMW dealer. You may have to pay for some diagnosis time but at least try to get an answer as to what it is. Being that the noise happened after you got the vehicle back from a rear main repair they could have installed something like the flywheel incorrectly. If it is in fact something caused by the previous repair have them pay for BMW to fix their mistake.

If they installed the flywheel incorrectly, they won't admit it. If I take it to a dealer, it will likely need to be repaired and I don't have the money. How much should a repair like that cost?
Answer
Well if it is a transmission issue you are probably looking at $750 to $1000 to remove and replace. But first diagnosing what is making that noise is what you should focus on. Noises can be difficult to diagnose. But if it wasn't there before this repair and came directly afterwards that where I would first focus my attention to.
