Question

My BMW X5 4.8is has a history of self level suspension problems. We had to endure many repair costs and recently told that the airpump had to be replaced. Less then a week later the front right shock absorber went out and needs expensive repair. What are the costs to be expected for the front right shock absorber (broken down in parts and labor)? Is it possible that the self level suspension message could have been all along connected to the failing front right shock absorber? The car has sport suspension. Thanks.

Optional Information

2005 X5 4.8is sport suspension X5 4.8is 4.8L,

Already Tried:
My car is a 2005 BMW X5 4.8is 4.8L, V8, Six-Speed Automatic, a 4 Door SUV AWD.

I live in the Middle East, in Doha, Qatar, bought the car used in October 2008 with 93,000km. It has now little over 100,000 km. I have been in contact with BMW in Germany regarding the repeated self level adjustment inactivated message. I was first told that the compressor had to be replaced. I doubted that. They reviewed the record again and suggested the airpump was working constantly and had to be replaced. Another expensive repair. One day after I get the car back I have a low tire pressure message. Drive the car to a tire center to check air pressure and for punctures. All is good, so they reset the low tire pressure message. Less then a week later I get an extremely unsafe feeling driving and bring the car in again. It turns out that the right front shock absorber is leaking and needs replacement. Is it possible that the self level adjustment problem has been all along linked to the failing shock absorber and I have been taken for a ride on the airpump replacement? Any advice is appreciated.

Answer

Hello,

Thank You for choosing Just Answer for your query. Yes, I can help you.

Yes, it is possible that the two are related. If the repair center was retrieving compressor overheat codes, this could indicate that the compressor was being run excessively due to running more than it should because of leak in the system (Right front shock).

The leaking shock "may" have been the cause of the failed compressor, but at this point in time it is impossible to know from one half way around the world over the internet.

The front strut (shock) retails for about $850 US and requires about two hours labor to replace.
